Listening Guides

Choosing a shruti that lets your voice open

A practical listening guide for finding a pitch that supports resonance without creating strain.

Pitch is not a badge

The most useful shruti is not the highest or lowest note you can reach. It is the centre from which your voice can move with steadiness and colour.

Listen for ease

Begin with a comfortable sustained Sa. Move gently through the middle register and notice whether the tone remains full.

  • If the lower notes lose presence, try moving slightly higher.
  • If the upper notes tighten early, move slightly lower.
  • Use fine tuning only after the larger pitch choice feels natural.

A good shruti makes practice feel spacious. It supports the voice instead of asking the voice to prove something.
